Midnight Calm Tonic warm chamomile and honey drink in a cream mug

Midnight Calm Tonic

A soothing nightcap mocktail with sleep-supporting herbs and gentle warmth

The grown-up bedtime ritual you didn't know you needed until now.

Why It Works

Magnesium glycinate is one of the most bioavailable forms of magnesium, known for promoting relaxation and supporting sleep quality. Combined with chamomile's gentle sedative properties and tart cherry's natural melatonin content, this tonic helps prepare your body for restful sleep without morning grogginess.

Equipment

  • Strainer
  • Bar Spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 chamomile tea bag or 1 tablespoon loose chamomile
  • 1/4 cup tart cherry juice unsweetened
  • 1/2 teaspoon magnesium glycinate powder about 100mg elemental magnesium
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  • Bring water to a boil, then remove from heat. Add chamomile and steep for 5 minutes.
  • Remove tea bag or strain loose chamomile. Pour tea into your favorite mug.
  • Add tart cherry juice, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and sea salt. Stir until honey dissolves.
  • Add magnesium glycinate powder and stir until completely dissolved. It may fizz slightly.
  • Let cool to comfortable drinking temperature, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Sip slowly as part of your wind-down routine, ideally 30-60 minutes before bed.

Notes

Drink 30-60 minutes before desired sleep time for best results. The magnesium and chamomile work gradually. Can be made ahead and gently reheated. Store refrigerated for up to 2 days.

Pro Tips

  • Magnesium glycinate tastes slightly sweet, unlike other magnesium forms that can taste bitter or cause digestive upset.
  • Don't skip the sea salt. It enhances all the other flavors and supports electrolyte balance.
  • Make the chamomile tea extra strong by using two bags if you need more sedative effect.
  • Dim your lights while drinking this to enhance melatonin production from the tart cherry.

Variations

  • Sleepy Chocolate: Add 1 teaspoon raw cacao for a magnesium boost and chocolate notes
  • Extra Calm: Add 100mg L-Theanine powder for enhanced relaxation
  • Creamy Version: Replace half the water with warm oat milk for a richer drink
  • Cold Brew: Steep chamomile in cold water overnight, then add other ingredients over ice

FAQ

Q: How is this different from taking a sleep supplement?

A: This combines multiple sleep-supporting ingredients in a relaxing ritual. The act of preparing and slowly drinking something warm signals your body to wind down, which supplements alone don't provide.

Q: Will I feel groggy in the morning?

A: Unlike many sleep aids, the ingredients here support natural sleep cycles rather than forcing sedation. Most people wake feeling refreshed rather than foggy.

Q: Can I drink this every night?

A: Yes. These ingredients are gentle enough for nightly use. Chamomile and tart cherry are foods, and magnesium glycinate is well-tolerated at this dose for most people.

Q: What if I don't have tart cherry juice?

A: Use regular cherry juice (with less sleep benefit) or substitute with 1/4 cup pomegranate juice for similar tartness and antioxidants.

Q: How much magnesium is in this?

A: About 100mg elemental magnesium, which is roughly 25% of the daily recommended value. This is a moderate, safe dose for most adults.

Q: Is this safe during pregnancy?

A: Consult your healthcare provider. Chamomile and magnesium are generally considered safe, but individual situations vary.
