Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Muddler
  • Strainer

Ingredients

  • 4 inches English cucumber roughly chopped
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Holy Basil Tulsi powder or 1 Tulsi tea bag steeped and cooled
  • 4 oz coconut water
  • 2 oz sparkling water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar or honey
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Ice
  • Cucumber ribbon and mint sprig for garnish

Instructions

  • In a shaker or jar, muddle cucumber and mint leaves until cucumber releases its juice and mint is fragrant.
  • Add Holy Basil powder (or steeped Tulsi tea), lime juice, agave, and sea salt. Stir to combine.
  • Add coconut water and ice. Shake gently for 10 seconds.
  • Strain into a wine glass or tumbler filled with fresh ice.
  • Top with sparkling water and stir gently.
  • Garnish with a cucumber ribbon (use a vegetable peeler) wrapped around the inside of the glass and a mint sprig.

Notes

Best consumed immediately for peak refreshment. The cucumber flavor fades if made too far ahead. To use Tulsi tea instead of powder, steep one tea bag in 2 oz hot water for 5 minutes, cool completely, then use in place of the powder.

Pro Tips

  • English cucumber (the long, shrink-wrapped variety) has thinner skin and fewer seeds than regular cucumber.
  • Muddle gently. Over-muddling makes cucumber bitter from the skin compounds.
  • Use a vegetable peeler lengthwise down the cucumber for elegant ribbon garnishes.
  • For extra zen, serve in a glass you've chilled in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Variations

  • Spa Water Plus: Skip the sparkling water for a still version that's pure hydration
  • Melon Moment: Replace half the cucumber with honeydew melon for sweeter notes
  • Green Garden: Add 2-3 fresh basil leaves alongside the mint for herbal complexity
  • Ginger Refresh: Add 1/4 inch grated fresh ginger for warming contrast to the cooling cucumber

FAQ

Q: What does Holy Basil taste like?

A: Holy Basil has a complex flavor: slightly peppery, with notes of clove and a hint of mint. It's more herbaceous than sweet Italian basil. In this drink, it adds sophisticated depth without being identifiable.

Q: Is this actually hydrating?

A: Yes. Coconut water provides natural electrolytes, cucumber is 96% water, and there's no caffeine or alcohol to dehydrate. This is functional hydration that tastes interesting.

Q: Can I use regular basil if I can't find Holy Basil?

A: You can, but the adaptogenic benefits are specific to Holy Basil (Tulsi). Regular basil provides flavor but not the stress-reducing compounds. Tulsi tea bags are widely available in grocery stores.

Q: How does Holy Basil reduce stress?

A: Holy Basil is classified as an adaptogen that helps modulate cortisol levels and supports the body's stress response. Research shows it may reduce anxiety and improve mood, though individual results vary.

Q: Will the cucumber make this taste like salad?

A: No. Muddled cucumber creates a clean, refreshing base that's more spa water than salad. The lime, mint, and coconut water transform it into something that feels like a proper drink.

Q: Is this good for post-workout?

A: Excellent choice. The coconut water replenishes electrolytes, the cucumber provides hydration, and the Holy Basil supports recovery from the stress of exercise.
