Lavender Lullaby Spritz

A floral evening spritzer with calming botanicals and gentle sweetness

What would happen if a spa and a cocktail bar had a very relaxing baby.

Why It Works

Lavender contains linalool, a compound shown to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation through its effect on the nervous system. Passionflower has been used for centuries to ease anxiety and support sleep, while lemon balm rounds out this trio of evidence-based calming botanicals.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a lemon-scented perennial herb from the mint family, native to the Mediterranean region, southern Europe, and central Asia. It has been cultivated for over 2,000 years and was highly valued by ancient Greeks and Romans for its medicinal properties. Medieval monks grew lemon balm in monastery gardens to make calming teas and tonics, and it was famously used in Carmelite water, a preparation made by French nuns in the 17th century to treat nervous disorders and promote longevity.

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried culinary lavender or 1/4 teaspoon lavender extract
  • 1 passionflower tea bag or 1 teaspoon dried passionflower
  • 4-5 fresh lemon balm leaves or 1/4 teaspoon dried
  • 4 oz hot water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 4 oz sparkling water
  • Ice
  • Fresh lavender sprig for garnish

Instructions

  • Steep lavender, passionflower, and lemon balm in hot water for 5 minutes. Use a small pot or heat-safe jar.
  • Strain the tea through a fine mesh strainer into a measuring cup. Press gently to extract all liquid.
  • Add honey while tea is still warm and stir until dissolved. Let cool to room temperature, about 5 minutes.
  • Add lemon juice to the cooled tea mixture.
  • Fill a coupe or wine glass with ice. Pour the tea mixture over the ice.

Pro Tips

  • Less is more with lavender. Too much creates a soapy taste. Start with less and add more next time if desired.
  • If using lavender extract, add it after steeping the other herbs to control intensity.
  • Fresh lemon balm leaves make a significant difference over dried. Grow a small pot on your windowsill.
  • Chill your glass in the freezer for 5 minutes before serving for extra elegance.

Variations

  • Rose Garden: Replace lavender with 1 teaspoon dried rose petals for a different floral profile
  • Deeper Calm: Add 1/4 teaspoon Ashwagandha powder for adaptogenic support
  • Honey Lavender Lemonade: Skip sparkling water, increase lemon juice, serve over crushed ice
  • Warm Version: Skip ice and sparkling water for a soothing hot tea on cold evenings

FAQ

Q: Where do I get culinary lavender?

A: Health food stores, specialty spice shops, or online retailers sell culinary-grade lavender. Look for 'food-grade' or 'culinary' on the label. Regular craft store lavender may contain pesticides.

Q: Will this make me drowsy?

A: These herbs promote relaxation without strong sedation. You'll likely feel calm but alert. Save this for evening rather than before driving or operating machinery.

Q: Can I taste the passionflower?

A: Passionflower has a mild, slightly grassy flavor that blends into the background. The lavender and lemon balm are the dominant flavors.

Q: Is this safe with anxiety medication?

A: Consult your doctor. These herbs can interact with sedatives and anti-anxiety medications. When in doubt, ask a healthcare provider.

Q: Can I use lavender essential oil instead?

A: No. Essential oils are not food-safe and can be toxic when ingested. Only use culinary lavender or food-grade lavender extract.

Q: How far before bed should I drink this?

A: 1-2 hours before desired sleep allows the calming effects to develop while giving time for the liquid to process before bed.
